However I would suggest that you differentiate by the level of stress on the "throat sound". As I recall French stresses the "r" intensely, so for lojban you might want to pronounce it softer, as has been suggested. No need to go for the English, but the German "r" is kind of soft. The "x" I remember as being pronounced as in Arabic, where it should sound like, how can I put this, you were gathering salive in order to spit. It is not a nice way of explaining the sound, but it=B4s something we can all imagine :) Only that you open the throat like saying the "r" in "rouge" without "rolling" it too much. For the "xr" it is "saliva" plus "rolling" the "r".
