It's probably not very common, but it does happen. For example, on IRC 
there is a user called {menturi}, which is a zi'evla with no defined 
meaning, but it doesn't matter since {la menturi} doesn't really need it 
to have one. There is another person who sometimes gets referred to as 
{la tcili}, which is also not a real gismu.

I'm not sure what the "general" opinion on this kind of practice is, I 
just know that it exists (to whatever limited degree).
