'zi'e' always terminates only the noi-phrase immediately in front of it,
and so as far as I can tell, it's exactly equivalent to 'ku'o', and
could always be replaced by it, if an arbitrary number of noi-phrases
were allowed in a row.

{ku'o} or {ge'u}, I suppose, but you're right! It is completely redundant then.
