   The reason you have to put cmene like {.bab.} and {.djein.} after {la}, is that {la} exempts its word from the strict rules that would otherwise be expected. But {la} simply means "that which is named" so it turns just about _anything_ into a name. It kind of causes the computer to interpret {datni} as a string of five phonetic sounds that don't necessarily mean data, but that which I'm naming Data.
   {la'o} means "the non-Lojban name:" and it also creates such an exemption, but even more so. The text string that follows doesn't even have to obey the morphological rules. There are names in natural languages that happen coincidentally to be spelled or pronounced just like a gismu, so if you want to say them in a Lojban text stream, I think you would probably use {la'o} and it would prevent that gismu from meaning what it would mean in Lojban.
Others would probably have a more fine-grained understanding than this.
