[lojban-beginners] Re: pa pemci



  I’’m guessing from Osmerus eperlanus.  But you’d have to ask Pierre, who invented it.  There’s no etymology record in the jbovlaste entry.  Not that I care.  I just looked for words that rhymed with blanu.  I could have just as easily substituted in merlanu, a whiting.

What was {sperlanu} derived from? Jbovlaste says it's a fu'ivla for {smelt}, but it doesn't look like any of the words I'd expect -- the English {smelt} or the scientific name for smelt. Though the second is probably preferable.
