That doesn't really work the way you think it does. your nu-internal
sentence actually translates to "someone (i observe) is talking to john,
I hear".
That's the case, because za'a or ti'e don't remove the word/construct
they follow from the selbri.
You could just leave out the ko'a and attach the za'a to tavla, I
suppose that would work :)
