In Spain they call them "be" and "uve". In Argentina we call them
"be larga" and "ve corta". So they need to be distinguished, but
there is no uniform way to do it. "w" and "y" also may have different
names: "doble ve", "uve doble", "ye", "i griega".

They are not pronounced differently. My last name has an accented "i",
so when I spell it out I say: "elle a eme be i a ese, con acento en la i".
Sometimes "doble ele" instead of "elle".
