"outward" and "inward" are keywords in the ma'oste, not
the definitions. The full definitions are:

ze'o: beyond/outward/receding from
zo'i: nearer than.../inward/approaching from ...

The mixing of direction and location is typical of the wording
for all FAhAs, for example:

ne'i: within/inside of/into ...
ni'a: downwards/down from ...

As I understand it, zo'i, zo'a, ze'o form a subsystem:
this-side-of ..., by ..., beyond ...

My proposed definitions in jbovlaste are:

ze'o: fi'o se ragve
zo'a: fi'o se noryragve
zo'i: fi'o se tolragve

I prefer {ne'inai} for that.
