Sure. You can (usually) also get prompt answers from #lojban channel on Freenode IRC network (see http://www.lojban.org/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=Lojban+IRC&bl=y if you're unfamiliar with IRC).

And how do a mailing list work?

A bit like Ethernet switches -- you send the mail to lojban-beginners@lojban.org, it's mirrored to all of us.
