Re: [lojban-beginners] Best methods to recall lojban words?

Hi Sam (do you happen to be "samrules"? if not, nevermind)

Hey all,

The biggest stumbling block for me is that I can't recall any lojban
words. They seem meaningless and homogenous. I can speak basic
spanish, german, and arabic, express myself freely in french, know
basic phrases in japanese, chinese, serbian, latin, and quenya, and
all of those have been by far easier to pick up than lojban.
All the languages you listed are much more difficult than Lojban. I believe the reason why you seem to have trouble picking up Lojban (vocabulary) is that you don't use it. Language sticks much better when there's a reason to use it and an environment to use it in. Once you had to look up the word for "say/express" {cusku} for the fifth time or so, you will start remembering some of it it and soon enough you won't have to look it up anymore at all. The same happens with every other word, too. Just give it some time.

I've tried spaced-repetition software such as Anki, and less cool
flashcards like Quizlet. The problem is I need context to give these
words meaning. The IRC channel is silent.
First of all, the #lojban IRC channel is anything but silent. If you expect people to answer within 10 seconds after you say something, don't forget that many people in there also have jobs and private life. However, usually there are at least some people who you can engage in a conversation with. Again, don't give up that easily.

(Also btw, I like quizlet quite a bit. For what it's worth, I once learned 200 gismu in 3 days with it.)

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about what worked for them
in remembering this language which, while containing shadows in
phonetic choice of the five most spoken languages, is kind of steep in
learning curve.

The learning curve doesn't seem that steep to me. Our lessons in #ckule (our teaching channel) have shown times and times that the majority of the grammar can be taught and retained in as little as three days.

I know a technique espoused by some educators is to give things a
pneumonic, such as preti --> "[vous êtes] prêt?" Which is a
question... But this seems like heresy for the spirit of lojban.

Personally, for words that have obvious cognates, I would easily remember those, but I wouldn't try to come up with a mnemonic for every word. Words will start to stick automatically once you use them enough and once you had to understand them in conversations (your brain will remember the word after a while because you don't want to have to look it up for the 10th time). So I recommend you to stick it out in IRC.

Good luck.
