[lojban-beginners] How to use skari?

The definition of {skari} is x1 is/appears to be of color/hue x2 as
perceived/seen by x3 under conditions x4.  The way I read that, x1 is
a colored object (i.e., an apple), and x2 is the color (i.e., red).
However, the word is apparently glossed as "color".  I would imagine
that the way to say "color", as in "favorite color" would be {selska},
since that fits with how I'm reading the place structure of {skari} in
the first place.  Am I wrong on this?  Am I right?  This is just one
of the more confusing gismu I've ran across.
