I see your point. The following wouldn't mean what you want:
vidru fi lo galxe be do
Something can infect your throat.
ca'a vidru fi lo galxe be do
Something is actually capable of infecting your throat.
Neither means that there is an actual infection in your throat.
Jacob's use of "bu'u" seems reasonable to me. "se di'o" would be another option.
The way "vidru" is defined is apparently inconsistent with what we can
do with other similar brivla like "kenra":
kenra lo galxe be do
Something is a cancer in your throat.
You've got a cancer in your throat.
