Re: [lojban-beginners] Request

You've been having a blind learner. He's just probably not said anything. I've actually already found "Lojban for Beginners". Is that the one you're saying is the best because if not, I'l be glad to switch.

after any of you give Lojban examples, could you guys translate them into English?

On this list, we usually do, but if one of us forgets to, you're more than welcome to ask us to do so.

I don't know a whole lot of Lojban. This really is the right place for me. By the way, about not comparing English with Lojban, how else am I supposed to understand the concepts if I don't compare with something?

A lot of things in Lojban don't match up to English and vice-versa, which is why it's not a good idea to base your learning of Lojban by comparing it.

For example, Lojban does not have nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc., it has only gismu, which can act as any of those. For example, {bajra} can be a noun: {lo bajra} "a runner", or a verb: {mi bajra} "I run", an adjective: {mi bajra klama} "I running type-of go".

Because of this, it's much, much better to learn Lojban from scratch, without bringing the concepts of whatever language(s) you know into the mix, for the simple reason that those concepts will only hurt your understanding in the long run.

If you haven't already I suggest checking out the learning materials for brand-new learners.

The first thing you should read is definitely "What is Lojban?", which gives a basic overview of the language.

Next there's "Google Wave lessons", which goes over much more of the language and, though currently incomplete, is an updating of the official textbook.

Then there's the official textbook, "Lojban for Beginners", which though slightly outdated covers everything you need to be conversationally fluent in Lojban. Just keep in mind that, where LfB and GW disagree, GW is correct.

Finally, there's the CLL, which has everything about the language, hence its name, "The Complete Lojban Language". This one is also a bit outdated, and is being worked on to bring it up to date as we speak, so again, where CLL and GW disagree, GW is correct.

There's much, much more, and you can see the full list of learning materials on the Lojban.org website at "Learning".

I can't vouch for the suitability of any of these materials for a blind learner- to the best of my knowledge, we've never had one. With that in mind, if anything is less than clear to you, feeel free to ask us for clarification, and if you have any suggestions for how to make Lojban easier for blind people, please let us know. I'm certain I speak for all of us when I say we will be glad to give you any help you need.
