Well, in this case, you're both right, because it depends on the standard for comparison. He is saying it can't be big, which is true when the standard for comparison being used is "animals". Obviously when comparing the size of that particular species to the median size of animals, no insect can be big. You, on the other hand, are correct as well, because you are using as your standard, "insects", and it is certainly large in comparison to the median size of all insects.
