So how do you convert a sumti to a selbri, without imposing a particular place
structure? I may want to say "ta me la'o .ly. Cucurbitaceae .ly. la'o .ly.
Sicyos .ly". Of course that's a silly example, since we have the word "guzme",
but there are lots of families that don't have common names in Lojban.

Why not "ta jutcmi la'o .ly. Sicyos .ly la'o .ly. Cucurbitaceae .ly."?

The selbri with arbitrary, context dependent place structure, is "co'e". If you want to flavor it with a sumti you could make a tanru: "me la'o .ly. Cucurbitaceae .ly co'e" or a lujvo "la'o .ly. Cucurbitaceae .ly zei co'e". But that could also mean "x1 hits x2 with a Cucurbitaceae", not necessarily "x1 is a specimen of Cucurbitaceae".
