The most recent thing learning lojban has made me more aware of is the English pattern:
... do you want to ...

Examples for review:

What type of food do you want to eat?
do djica lo ma cidja

"lo ma djica" is more like "whose food?". If you expect an answer like "lo jungo cidja" then "lo mo cidja" might be a bettter option.

What do you want to eat?
pei citka ma

Where do you want to eat?
pei citka tu'i ma

"tu'i" is for permanent sites, so it's not used much. The spatial analogue of "ca" is "bu'u".

When do you want to leave?
pei cliva ca ma

How do you want to get there?
pei klama fo ma

Why do you want to take that street?
do zmanei zo'e ki'u ma

Who do you want to pick up first?
???

(au) pei crepu ma pa mai

Does {pei} work in these examples to indicate we are interested in their preference?

I think so, but you can be more specific with "au pei".

Does {lo ma cidja} work for asking 'what type of food'?

I think "lo mo cidja" works better. Or "lo klesi be lo cidja bei ma".
