It sounds like this might be a more generic problem than just "er". Do you have trouble hearing a different between "ar" and "air" as well?
I have no trouble distinguishing between {ar} as in "far" and {air} as in "fire".
Does "Vi" just tend to sound like "V" lengthened? Is this just a generic issue in linguistics in general?
I think I'd be willing to place money on that.
