But is that just a malgli way of looking at it?
I can't think of a way to define "evidence" in english better than
"something which gives credence to the belief that ____". I think
it's only in english that we think of "reason for believing" as being
somehow less sciency than "evidence".
So I would say that X in "apples fall is X that newton was right" and
"the fact that I ate is X that I was hungry" are the same thing. I
think you'll be hard-pressed to find a distinction between the two.
The one just sounds like it should be "evidence" because it's being
rendered in a scientific context while the other is more mundane
day-to-day sounding "reason".
