Others have mentioned others, but the best alternative I've found is Anki.

Main draws:
Main drawbacks:
  • No way to "pause" for vacations, so cards can build up fast
  • No built-in multiple-choice function like smart.fm (yet!)
  • The audio feature seems buggy in my Ubuntu version
