[lojban-beginners] Thoughts on the website and resources

Hi everyone,
I’ve now been studying Lojban for about ten days. I’ve enjoyed it,
found lots of useful resources and lots of friendly and helpful
people. I’d like to share my humble ideas about what I think might
help attract more Lojban students.

The front website is very helpful but I noticed that a lot of the
resources are disjointed and many are outdated. For example, the audio
section has lots of links, some are now dead or unavailable. Perhaps
it would be best to centralise all the links and clear up the dead
links?

The website also might be a bit confusing and offputting to newcomers,
partly because many of the links are so old - I don’t know about
others but to me a site with lots of old links is a ‘dead’ site - and
partly because some resources are a little esoteric. For example, the
link to the “phrase” sheet has a few jokes, an unclear layout and what
appears to be people talking to each other in page editing. I know
this was done by people with all good intentions but perhaps to a
casual browser, it’s offputting?

In my humble opinion, what would would really help the Lojban cause
would be to (as mentioned) update and centralise links and resources
and also to change the layout of the website. Perhaps what would work
would be to combine the excellent introduction page and book with
sections, perhaps a section for beginners, intermediates and advanced
students.

Also, as a teacher myself, I was sad to see some very promising
projects that seem to have dropped off. The Lojban podcast was in my
opinion an excellent idea, but that’s now dead. Lojban blogs, more
videos such as the excellent “Learn Lojban vocabulary" youtube videos
posted by NegativeClock, and more audio resources for students would
make for excellent publicity and resources. I understand that it’s
necessary to have extensive grammar resources, but I also feel
listening and speaking focus is equally vital.

I’m focusing on these things because I’ve enjoyed my short time
learning so much and would love to see the Lojban project advance.
Perhaps when I become better I can offer some podcats or Lojban blogs
myself.

I hope I’ve posted this in the right and best place. Please feel free
to forward it to anyone.

Thanks for everyone’s hard work and assistance. I look forward to
communicating in Lojban soon.

Greg
