Really? I find that I pronounce bite like lojban byit. Maybe a better example of yi in english is "site". When I say "site" out loud in english there is absolutely no hint of the lojban "a" sound.
I think that in general english "s[i]te" and "b[uy]" are two different and distinct diphthongs
