There is a problem with that method:  Do we need to say the year 23 AD as 0023?
 How does one state the year 37492 AD as four digits?  Also, how do you specify
the reference point for a year?  For example, in _Brave_New_World_ the era is
AF (After Ford) rather than AD or BC.  How would one specify this sort of
thing?

I realize that these situations do not come up often, but they need to be
expressable in the same way as all other dates, possibly in a more expanded
form.
