Fortunately there are some distributions specifically focussing on
non-technical users. One such distribution is Ubuntu Linux
(www.ubuntulinux.org). I use it daily (though I'm quite a techie), and
the rest of my family too. The advantage over some other "easy distros"
is that it's non-commercial.
