I think that means "compare with" -- I assume it comes from Latin
like i.e. (id est) or e.g. (exempli gratia), but I am really not
sure.

Yes, that's what the abbreviation means (short for Latin "confer"), but what are the comparison criteria? How does a gismu get into the cf list?
