Most of my word lists are sorted by usage; why not just take the
first 200 or so?

I
suspect that Colin feels this would not have enough variety (at first)
to combine to form useful sentences right from the beginning. There is
no gismu until word number 14 and the next one is not until 43. He
seems to have something Pimsleur-like in mind, involving whole
sentences.
This is why when I began committing cards in Supermemo I started out
skipping ahead to commit 1 gismu for every 4th or 5th cmavo, and
gradually increased it until-- now that I've memorized almost half the
vocabulary-- I'm locking about 2 gismu for every 1 cmavo.
