I'd say that the first "A" in "America" is a shwa, yes.

They're called "schwa" and "schwi" in fact, with the "c."
A most significant example I've seen in a book on English
grammar was "station" (pronounced as: [steicyn]).
Actually, several nouns ending in "-ion" have the schwa
vowel.
