French éperlan, which appears to be the source of the species name. Words 
beginning "sp" in Romance regularly add an "e" to the beginning in French, 
Portuguese, and Spanish, then lose the "s" in French. IIRR this word is from 
Germanic, and would be "sparling" in English.
