Perhaps something younger would be nice to see around. My flatmate learns French and owns some children's books in French. An example is the hungry caterpillar.

shorter then Harry Potter, Artemis, Fowler, etc. that Colin seems to

Andrew:

First of all, let's start with what we agree on.  We need childrens
books for people to start with, and Alice in Wonderland hardly
qualifies.

Colin:

Include me out.  Apart from attracting initial interest, I think what's
lacking is the equivalent of children's books.  Not complex things like
"Alice", or intense things like "The Red Mask", but children's adventure
and
action stories.  Direct, simple, full of things happening that make you
want
to know what's coming next.

"Harry Potter", "Guards! Guards!" or "Artemis Fowl", for example,
although
they are all too long.
