Commas are always optional???
Always.
Take for example the German name {.io,axim.}. I know
how to pronouce it. Do you?
In fact, my second name is Joaquín. :)
But how would you pronouce
{.ioaxim.}? I think the comma is absolutely essential
here! Don't you agree?
It changes nothing. {oa} cannot form a diphthong in Lojban,
so in fact it can only be pronounced as two separate syllables.
But even in cases where a diphthong is possible in Lojban,
say {marias}, both pronunciations {ma,ri,as} and {ma,rias}
are valid pronunciations of the same word. You can use the
comma to indicate which one you prefer, but unless it is
your own name and you want to impose your preferred
pronunciations on others, there really is no reason to use
commas. The same goes for capitalization.
