gerku is used to refer to a domesticated dog as well as canines in general. Keep in mind that certain canines also have their own gismu (lorxu for fox, and labno for wolf). If you don't specify differently it is assumed you are talking about a domesticated dog.

I'm wondering about the "species" designation for the x2 place--my impression is that "dog" refers to a specific (sub) species: Canis lupus (familiaris), meaning that the x2 slot would only really be about breeds, and not species, since the species would be redundant.  Is "dog" here actually referring a higher-level classification, like Canis or Canidae?  Can a coyote be properly referred to as "gerku?"  A fox?  Or is "gerku" just for domesticated dogs?
