So xorxes, I've been waiting to hear you weigh in on this and am kind of disappointed that you didn't give an example of how you understand {loi birje} to work.  What comes to mind when someone tells you {mi pinxe loi birje}?

Neither "associated with" nor "considered individually" sounds right.
I would say "lo birje" is just "beer".

  mi pinxe lo birje
  "I drink beer."

  lo birje cu ta'e jikru lo bavmi
  "Beer is generally brewed from barley."

  e'o ko dunda lo va birje mi
  "Please give me that beer over there."
