The latter statement may be correct, but I never was taught (post WWII) tha=
t 
'Karl der Große' was a German emperor - nor that he was a French emperor: 
there was no 'german' or 'french' state at that time! Carolus Magnus 
(Charlesmagne), king of 'Franken' (Franconia?), was regarded the leader of =
the 
Roman Empire (much later called 'Das Römische Reich Deutscher Nation').
