If the dot is considered to be a member of the lojban alphabet, then
{deple'u} is more precise. A someting-le'u is a something-bu'i that
forms part of an alphabet and represents something. The intermediate 
step would be a something-sni, which represents but need not form
part of an alphabet. So:

lo depybu'i:  The symbol ".".
lo depsni: The symbol "." representing a pause.
lo deple'u: The symbol "." representing a pause as a member of 
            the Lojban alphabet.

(Then there is the question of whether it really represents a pause
or actually a glottal stop.)
