Yes, a word beginning with a vowel must be preceded by a pause, but it doesn't 
have to be written. It's better to write it, though.

It is even possible, though hard to read, to omit all spaces in a sequence 
consisting of cmavo, all except possibly the first beginning with consonants 
and none containing 'y', and possibly one brivla beginning with a consonant 
at the end: {ilezdani belebarda angeli cublanu}.
