Indeed, it seems silly to me too.

Let's illustrate this. Alice and Bob are _talking_ (verbal 
conversation) in lojban about lojban.

A: na lojbau drani fa lo'u mi je do klama le'u

B: je'enai

A: mi pu cusku lu na lojbau drani fa lo'u mi je le'u
   ... (oops)
   si
   do klama le'u

Alice says "le'u" too early, and wants to correct that. IMHO, the
above utterance is the most obvious and intuitive way to do it.

Now, John, you're saying that Alice is being ungrammatical. OK. Now,
how would you continue the dialog, in the position of Alice, to get
her point across ?
