3 loafs

This is my first translation exercise. It is a fable "Tri kalacha i odna
baranka" (Three loafs and one bagel) by Lev Tolstoy from his "Azbuka"
(an elementary school reader). The Russian original is available on request.

The Lojban translation:

[1] lo pa nanmu cu xagji
[2] .i te vecnu lo pa barda bliku be lo nanba gi'e citka
[3] .i ku'i ca'o xagji
[4] .i te vecnu lo remoi bliku gi'e citka
[5] .i ku'i ca'o xagji
[6] .i te vecnu lo cimoi bliku gi'e citka
[7] .i ku'i ca'o xagji
[8] .i baku te vecnu loi cmalu djine nanba

A literal English translation from Lojban:

[1] One man is hungry.
[2] <He> buys one big block of bread and eats.
[3] However, continues to be hungry.
[4] <He> buys a second block and eats.
[5] However, continues to be hungry.
[6] <He> buys a third block and eats.
[7] However, continues to be hungry.
[8] After that, <he> buys a mass of small toroidal breads
and, after the event of eating one toroid, ceases to be hungry.
[9] After that, the man hits the head with the hand and expresses: "
[10] Complaint! I am foolish.
[11] Unhappiness! I wasted SO many breads with what justification?
[12] [obligation] I [past] cause the event of a bagel being the first
in the set of things eaten by me."

A rough English translation from the Russian original:

[1] A man was hungry.
[2] He bought a loaf and ate it;
[3] he still was hungry.
[4] He bought another loaf and ate it;
[5] he still was hungry.
[6] He bought a third loaf and ate it;
[7] and he still was hungry.
[8] Then he bought bagels and, when he ate one, he was full up.
[9] Then the man slapped his head and said:
[10] "What a fool I am!
[11] Why did I waste so many loafs?
[12] I should rather eat first a bagel."

The most difficult for me was to choose the articles and to translate
the subjunctive mood in [12].
