There is no such thing as a common European culture, even though the
EU propagandists would like us to believe that there is :)
First names are normally used in Sweden, even when talking to
strangers, except in extremely formal situations. In Germany it's
completely different; a German student would not address his
professor by first name, while a Swedish student would.
One thing that is different between the USA and Sweden though, is
the usage of words like "luv" and "hon". In the US, these seem to
be used for almost any person and appear to have lost their
meaning completely.
