cai is for paroxysms of emotion; .u'u cai should mean you just
accidentaly killed someone's baby or something.

That is an *excellent* colloquial back-translation.  .io

It matches my intended meaning perfectly, although for "bizarre
parallels" I might have said "bizarre variants", just to be more
English colloquial.
