I'd like your help with suggestions about ritual and ceremony. On
Sunday of jbonunsla the weekend after next, we will hold a town hall
meeting as a closing ceremony. (It may also be the inaugural meeting
of the Lojban International Enthusiast Society.)
In addition to our unprecedented level of attendance, we hope to get
lots of telepresence using Voice Over IP if we can get the tech to
work. The idea is to get the community pulse, give everybody a timed
period to stand up to the lectern and say something (preferably a
prepared statement in Lojban to ensure brevity). We'll condense all
the topics broached over the weekend and get a sense of what the
Lojban project as a whole has accomplished, at jbonunsla this year,
and in wrap-up of 2006.
I believe this is important because jbonunsla is the global convention
of our project; our reunion. While it doesn't absolutely have to have
the feel of an official global congress (the one at Penguicon
certainly wasn't aimed for that, for instance), we have an opportunity
to give that impression to Philcon attendees, especially with so many
LLG members present.
Here's an idea for a tradition. All weekend we stack things into a
tower of Babel. At the opening of jbonunsla, the event organizer or
host welcomes the attendees in Lojban and puts something on the table.
When an attendee uses complete valid Lojban (of at least one full
bridi) in conversation about what is going on, that attendee may add
something shallow, stable, and sturdy to the tower. It gets their
sticky note on it and if necessary, the tower is reordered for size.
When a tower reaches the ceiling, a new one is started.
At the end of the town hall closing ceremonies, whoever has the most
links in a tower tips that tower over, we all applaud, and jbonunsla
has ended until next time.
What do you think would make a good closing tradition? Or do you like this one?
