We tried the "something that occurs nowhere else" trick for fu'ivla compounding, using ",iy," as the hyphen. I think someone eventually came up with a "somewhere else" and it was aesthetically displeasing to people as well.
The (unofficial) solution implemented by camxes for fu'ivla compounding is: (1) add {'y} to a fu'ivla to make a non-final rafsi (the fu'ivla by itself works as a final rafsi). (2) any rafsi attached to the front of a fu'ivla rafsi must end in {y} (i.e. it must be a 4-letter rafsi or a CVC rafsi or another fu'ivla rafsi) (3) if the fu'ivla starts with a glottal stop, change it to {'} when used non-initially. Example: {barda zei .iglu zei prenu} = {bardy'iglu'ypre} mu'o mi'e xorxes
