Not a lot of choice.

The course that she is taking uses VB in Visual Studio, which I suspect 
is extremely Windows specific, since it is a Microsoft product.

I think there is a Java version tied to .NET that can create and use 
.NET objects and classes, but that wouldn't make it usable outside of 
Windows.
