Then you've led a very sheltered life. :) The usual classification is SVO.
The object is normally taken to be a part of the predicate, the predicate
is the rest of the sentence besides the subject.
I suppose we can get away with using "verb" for both senses because
the verb of SVO usually can only consist of a verb in the part-of-speech
sense. The subject and the object can be more varied, and in any
case hey use the same part of speech, so they need to be
distinguished.
