Doesn't that follow from the original? If they are defeated, then obviously
they weren't (properly) united in the first place.

It may follow, but nobody says "el pueblo, vencido, jamás estará
unido". The temporal order matters.

I'm not objecting to the translation though, I think {lei prenu
go pa mei gi ka'e nai te jinga} is pretty good.
