I had managed to work myself into the impression that a suite
wouldn't be large enough to seat the number of people required.

A friend who got a suite for a con party, however, assures me that a
reasonably sized suite parlour room (hers was 450 square feet) can
hold a good 15 to 20 people, on chairs and everything.

At some point we'll be too big for a regular suite, and then you move to a larger one - probably when the number staying at the hotel full time exceeds 20-25. I've seen science fiction con suites, usually held in executive sized suites, that held 50 people easily. Sometimes they get two adjoining rooms that have a connecting door and then keep that door open. But an Embassy Suites type suite can hold 15-20, with the primary problem getting the hotel to provide extra chairs (or allow you to bring some folding chairs in).
