"meri" isn't a name, since all names in Lojban end in a consonant. "la meri" 
is grammatical, but unlikely, since "ri" refers to the last sumti - it would 
be like using "He" as a name.

As to "la tam.", it's probably the way the writer pronounced "Tom".
