Question about bridi/selbri

In "The Complete Lojban Language" chapter 2, a schema is drew:


{......bridi(predicate)......}
John     is the father of Sam.
{sumti}  {selbri        } {sumti}


Why is it not like this?


{.....bridi(proposition).....}
John     is the father of    Sam.
{sumti}  {selbri(predicate)} {sumti(argument)}
