The a of mate in English is a tense lojban e, and is thus acceptable.
Actually, it's more of an ei, since English tends to dipthongize vowels.

Gismu can differ only in stressed vowel, but not only in unstressed vowel.

"zei'a" would have to be an experimental cmavo, since it has three vowels.
It might have been proposed at one point, but i don't know of any such.
