All this is making me think that some of the tech fixes didn't get
transferred to 3.0.0 for some reason.  Unfortunately, I can't
find any later version of 2.x.x, so these problems will just have
to be fixed one by one (or left alone, on the assumption that
Robin's effort is going to become official parser 4.x).
