Yes, you would need a {cu} (or a {ku}) there.
(Of course a lot of existing sentences are invalid due 
to missing {cu}'s anyway, even in the most official texts.)

One additional advantage of the CMENE = BRIVLA move is
that it allows things like {la mikce jivagos} or
{la famti tom}.
