[lojban] Regarding the lojban film idea.

coi rodo

Today I was talking to a film-maker about lojban and came up with an idea which may work. Many film-makers have short films sitting around which they don't know what to do with but are reluctant to relinquish complete control over. I discussed with my friend the possibility of providing access to these films under a creative commons like license which only allows them to be freely distributed if they are dubbed into a foreign language for use as language learning educational material.

This allows the film-maker to retain control over the distribution of the native language version, yet gives them the power to see their work in the public (in a suitably restricted sense) without worrying about distribution of their unmodified original content. This immediately solves the problem of how to get films made, as the community only has to develop the skills for dubbing rather than film-making. It also allows in a limited sense some small exposure of a film-makers works which may not have found a market outside specialist screenings.

This idea went down extremely well, and my friend immediately offered the use of several short films he had worked on provided this usage was ensured.

I am going to look into this (perhaps using a variation of the developing nations cc license which cory doctrows work is now under) and chat to my network in the film industry to see how many people would be amenable to this kind of distribution of their work.
